Retaining Walls & Concrete Masonry
Functional, attractive walls that hold back soil and create usable outdoor space.

Turn Sloped Yards Into Usable Space
If your property has slopes, drainage issues, or soil erosion problems, a retaining wall might be the answer. Retaining walls hold back earth, create level terraces, prevent erosion, and turn unusable hillsides into functional outdoor spaces. They're both practical and attractive, adding structure and value to your property.
We've been building retaining walls and concrete masonry structures throughout West Lafayette since 2024, working with homeowners who need to manage slopes, create garden beds, build terraced yards, and solve drainage problems. A well-designed retaining wall isn't just stacked blocks. It requires proper engineering, drainage systems, and construction techniques to ensure it stays stable and functional for decades.
Retaining Wall Options
We build several types of retaining walls based on your needs, budget, and site conditions:
- •Concrete block walls: Interlocking modular blocks that create strong, attractive walls. Available in various colors and textures. Good for walls up to 4-6 feet tall.
- •Poured concrete walls: Cast-in-place concrete walls for taller applications or when maximum strength is required. Can be left exposed or faced with stone.
- •Natural stone walls: Traditional dry-stacked or mortared stone walls for a classic, timeless look.
- •Timber or tie walls: Railroad ties or landscape timbers for simple, cost-effective walls in low-stress applications.
The right choice depends on wall height, soil conditions, drainage needs, and your aesthetic preferences. We'll evaluate your site and recommend the most appropriate and cost-effective solution.
Why Engineering and Drainage Matter
A retaining wall holds back tons of soil and water pressure. Building one without proper engineering is asking for failure. Foundation starts with excavation and a compacted gravel base. Taller walls need concrete footings for stability.Proper setback means walls lean slightly into the slope they're retaining, providing natural stability.
Drainage is critical. Water building up behind a wall creates tremendous pressure that will eventually cause failure. We install drainage systems including gravel backfill, perforated drain pipes, and weep holes to keep water moving away from the wall. Skipping drainage to save money is the number one reason retaining walls fail.
For walls over 4 feet tall or in challenging conditions, engineering may be required by code. We work with structural engineers when needed to ensure walls are designed correctly and meet all safety requirements.
Other Concrete Masonry Services
Beyond retaining walls, we handle all types of concrete masonry work. Garden walls and raised beds create defined planting areas and add structure to your landscaping. Outdoor steps built with concrete blocks or stone provide safe access on slopes.
Pillar and column work for gates, mailboxes, and decorative features.Fire pits and outdoor fireplaces using concrete block and stone.Seat walls around patios that provide both seating and definition to outdoor spaces.
Planning a new concrete patio? We can coordinate retaining walls, steps, and other masonry features to create a complete outdoor living area.
Built for Indiana's Climate
West Lafayette's freeze-thaw cycles put extra stress on retaining walls. Water that seeps into walls or behind them can freeze, expand, and cause damage. That's why proper drainage and using materials rated for cold climates is essential.
We build walls designed to handle Indiana weather. Adequate drainage, proper footings below frost line, and quality materials all contribute to walls that last. If you have an existing retaining wall showing signs of failure, our repair services can evaluate the problem and recommend solutions.
